Volition to release stand-alone Red Faction Multiplayer experience?
One big difference between Guerilla and Armageddon is that the latter doesn't feature competitive multiplayer - instead it comes packed with a 'horde' like wave based combat mode called 'Infestation'. So when and why was this decision made to pull out the competitive aspect to Red Faction? Well, I went to find out.
At a recent 'Review Event' for the upcoming game, I spoke to Jameson Durall - the game's Senior Designer - about why exactly this decision was made and also what possibilities there are for the future.
Here is me, with this 'mini' report.
XG 24/7 (Sam Clay): Multiplayer, I want to play with my friends, obviously the big difference for Armageddon is that there is NO multiplayer, when was that decision made?
Jameson Durall: One of the biggest things we wanted to do with this game is create a better story, it didn't feel right having players killing each other with this new found 'alien force', we want to create modes which have the feel of 'fighting for the same cause' and sharing salvage amongst your team mates. We really wanted to merge the experience together.
XG 24/7: For the competitive multiplayer though, it was something you already had built, how hard would it be to stick it into Armageddon?
JD: The game is the same engine so we could of stuck on a multiplayer experience but it was our decision to make a co-operative experience instead.
XG 24/7: Do you guys see yourself releasing a stand-alone multiplayer experience? You've already worked on an XBLA title, can you see this happening for the multiplayer?
JD: I don't see why not, that is a definite possibillity, it's such a self contained thing that this could definetly be something we could see ourselves looking into.
If anything this is now pretty much rumour mill on what Volition are working on - They are working on a secret project (known as 'Secret Project Y') as well as obviously working on Saints Row the Third.
We'll keep an eye out!
