Battlefield 3′s executive producer says Back to Karkand is more than a map pack, wants “to release a new package”

After a rocky launch Battlefield 3 has now shifted a whopping 5 millions units, so that's a huge target market for the upcoming expansion "Back to Karkand". Some say it's just a map pack, but Patrick Bach thinks otherwise.

We had a chat with Executive Producer on Battlefield 3, Patrick Bach, and asked him all about the upcoming expansion pack "Back to Karkand".

XG247 (Sam Clay): Firstly, what is “Back to Karkand”?

Patrick Bach: First of all, it’s more than a map pack. We don’t want to release a few new maps, we want to release a new package. It’s an homage to Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 1942, picking the best maps from that era; “Strike at Karkand”, “Sharqi Peninsula”, “Gulf of Oman” and of course “Wake Island”.

XG247 (Sam Clay): If the average Joe turned around and said “Back to Karkand is just another map pack with guns” would you say he’s wrong or right?

Patrick Bach: I would say you’re wrong if you think that, generally a map pack in most games is just maps, you don’t even get the guns, here you get maps, guns, vehicles, you get a lot more persistent stuff, you get dog tags, the whole dog tag system in BF 3 is quite cool, you actually customise your dog tag to show it off to the people you killed, you can also steal dog tags from the enemy by knifing them.

By not calling Back to Karkand an expansion, EA and DICE have really got my hopes up for it, they have a huge chance to shake up the way added content is packaged for mainstream FPS', here's hoping they do it well.
