Origin required for Mass Effect 3 PC.

So that's two games that will only work via Origin.

Back in October, PC gamers kicked up a bit of a fuss with Battlefield 3 being an Origin only game. Seems like we're set for it all over again with Mass Effect 3.

Echoing the furor of Battlefield 3, Bioware have also confirmed that Mass Effect 3 will not be available on Steam, Valve's digital distribution service. Meaning those who want a digital copy will have to get it via Origin too.

..I'll give PC gamers a moment to smash their rooms up with a baseball bat.

Ok good.

The news comes via an official forum post on the BioWare Social Network. The post explains that Origin will be needed for both physical and digital copies of Mass Effect 3. A one-off authorization process will also occur for a single-player campaign, with a constant Origin connection needed for multiplayer.

BioWare's Chris Priestly explained why Mass Effect 3 won't be on Steam:

During initial release Mass Effect 3 will be available on Origin and a number of other 3rd party digital retailers, but not on Steam at this time. Steam has adopted a set of restrictive terms of service which limit how developers interact with customers to deliver patches and other downloadable content. We are intent on providing Mass Effect to players with the best possible experience no matter where they purchase or play their game, and are happy to partner with any download service that does not restrict our ability to connect directly with our consumers.

Myeah, the same spiel we got about Battlefield 3. Pretty much a convoluted way of forcing Origin's use, and thus it's perceived "popularity".
