Nintendo 3DS Will Be Region-Locked
Bad news for those of you who were considering paying out to import a shiny new Nintendo 3DS from Japan when it launches next month...it looks like Nintendo will be region-locking their new handheld.
The news has come from a Japanese email in which Nintendo's support team describe how both the hardware and software for the new device will be locked out to anyone not in Japan...
"There are no region codes in the DS and DSlite but DSi, DSiLL, and 3DS have region codes. The region codes are installed in each game and the 3DS itself. If the codes don't match, you can't play. If the region codes are different, for example if you play a Korean 3DS game with a Japanese 3DS system (or vice versa) you won't be able to play at all."
So there it is, looks like we shall all have to wait until the US and European releases to be able to take home glasses-free 3D handheld gaming!
