Welcome to Moscow, 2033

The Moscow underground is full of different types of life in the year 2033 and sadly most of it is the hazardous alien type from the surface who have snuck underground for a crafty fag while there Alien bosses go for a toilet break. As well as the Aliens though, you’ll be meeting all different types of Humans whilst playing through this enticing story-driven FPS.

We played through the 4 opening levels of the game. The first\prologue level actually has you playing a moment which is 4 years in the future (Making you flash a ‘?’ logo above your own brain). This moment has you climbing to the surface to go and take out some dangerous critters and deal with a specific mission which we had no idea about. Sadly this is cut short as you take a nasty injury to your leg, we even got to see our video-game self crawl for help in his own blood…nice.

Interview with Dmitry Glukhovsky

People make stories, Dmitry Glukhovsky wrote this one. His famous Russian cult novel has made it big in gaming ‘Hollywood’ thanks to the guys at the Ukraine studio 4a Games. You can tell from the get go of the game that this game has been made to tell many a story. From the immediate reactions of others around you to the actual look and feel of the game itself. The silence of the underground metro system and the spooky eerie wind speeds on the surface made us feel right at home…in a story we mean, I sadly don’t wish to live in a post-nuclear attack where Aliens roam the earth, no thanks!

The reason we feel that you’ve got to put Metro 2033 on your to-do list this year is because It’s an experience which you won’t of got for a long time. From just our sneak-peak of what we got of this “Underground Story Driven Chaos” we just wanted to go back to the office and kick back with a good 8 hours of playtime just to keep us all intact.

Specialist Firearms

During the play through we did get to hand some of the game’s firearms. The weapons of 2033 aren’t the laser pistols which Tomorrow’s World were promising you, Their more like the armoury of the 1980s. You have weapons which are from the surface and therefore of a better build and quality (Accuracy, firepower etc.) and then you have the weapons which have been made in the Metro System (MacGyver style) as well as some weapons simply named ‘Basterd Guns’ . There was an immediate difference with each type of weapon. With the new style Metro weapons we were firing up walls and everywhere other than our specified target, It was like an episode of Art Attack if the paint was bullets and if the show was rated M for Mature.

NPC Opportunities

There were many moments in the underground where we felt compelled to just stand around and listen to NPCs talk. You felt naturally compelled to find out about Jim’s drug problem* or Garry’s thirst for a glass of whiskey* (*not accurate). By this we mean that the story screenplay felt spot on. Dmitry’s novel really feels in place and you definitely feel that It’s living up to a Author’s work. It’s a conversation Haven. Hell this game looks nice too, really nice!

Overall then:

Put the 19th March 2010 in your calendar because that’s the day a nuke will hit the face of gaming, hopefully in a good way. We have trust in what we saw that this game will turn out the way we want it too!
